The Limpopo Crossing -Hey! Makwerekwere!
The dry scrub of the Limpopo riverbed smelled of diesel fumes and stagnant mud. Panashe flattened his chest against the thorn-strewn red dirt, shielding his younger sister, Ruvimbo. Two miles behind them lay Musina, where vigilante mobs wielding sjamboks and iron bars had set spaza shops and migrant dormitories ablaze. Beitbridge was just across the bridge, but the official terminal was crawling with patrol units.
Heavy footsteps crushed dry acacia pods nearby. Men with red bandanas tied around their forearms scanned the reeds with high-powered flashlights.
“Hey! Makwerekwere!” a voice barked in rough Sepedi. “Come out! We know you’re hiding in the bush!”
Panashe felt Ruvimbo tremble violently. It wasn’t regular border guards. It was the border syndicate notorious for abducting fleeing migrants, demanding massive ransom payouts via mobile money from terrified relatives before dumping victims into the muddy waters.
“Give me your phone,” Panashe whispered urgently into Ruvimbo’s ear. “Delete the banking apps right now.”
A bright beam suddenly pinned them against the wire fence.
“Found two of them!” a stocky man yelled, lunging forward with an iron crowbar raised. “Five thousand rand each, or you don’t reach Beitbridge alive!”
Panashe surged upward, throwing a fistful of blinding sand directly into the enforcer’s eyes. The man roared in pain, swinging wildly. Panashe grabbed his sister’s wrist, ducked underneath the jagged tear in the rusted border wire, and plunged knee-deep into the sluggish current of the Limpopo. Behind them, shouts and heavy boots splashed into the water in furious pursuit.
Lunging through the muddy shallows, Panashe hauled Ruvimbo onto the Zimbabwean riverbank. Bright stadium lights from the Beitbridge border terminal flooded the dark water. Safe on home soil, Panashe turned back—watching the shadowy vigilantes curse and retreat into the South African bush.
